Newcastle on a Budget: Affordable Travel Tips and Tricks

Sure, Newcastle Upon Tyne has a great reputation as a party town and is well worth a visit, but how do you make sure you're travelling to Newcastle without breaking the bank?

If you're looking for a shoestring city break or just want to take in the sights without splurging on taxis or rental cars, this city offers the ultimate budget experience.

Not only is Newcastle serviced by multiple budget airlines but you can take the Metro or Bus straight to the City Centre. From there you can easily explore some of Newcastle's key landmarks like the Quayside on foot, or better yet buy a day ticket to explore the city further.

In this guide you'll discover some of the lowest cost budget options for getting around Newcastle, as well as learn about some of the most
affordable accommodation available once you've finished your travels.

Jet in to Geordie-land

Flying on a budget? Wey aye man. When it comes to cheap flights Newcastle takes the crown through a number of budget airlines including easyJet, and Jet2 service Newcastle International Airport.

If you're based in the UK, flights to Newcastle are available from Belfast, Aberdeen, London, Exeter and Southampton.

Newcastle International can also be reached from a number of airports abroad via budget airlines like Ryanair. Connecting flights run to Newcastle from European airports across Spain, Germany, France, Ireland, Greece and Poland.

Travel to Newcastle via Train

If you're already in the UK and don't want the hassle of being squeezed into a budget airline seat, you can travel to Newcastle more luxuriously via train.

Newcastle Railway station (also known as 'Newcastle Central') lies along the East Coast Main Line, so runs frequent trains from Liverpool, London and Manchester. You can also travel to Newcastle by train from a number of other cities, including Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Birmingham, York, Bristol, Southampton and Plymouth.

The best way to get the cheapest train tickets to the city is to buy a National Railcard, which offers up to one third discounts, though you'll need to visit Newcastle regularly to see real savings.

Another great way to save is to buy tickets as early as possible. Railway lines service Newcastle like LNER, TransPennine Express and Northern usually release tickets 12 weeks in advance.

Taking a Stroll

Newcastle is one of the very best cities for walking, given that the city centre itself only covers around one square mile. This is where you'll find some of the city's top

attractions such as the Quayside, which is perfect for an evening stroll. Other must see on-foot destinations include Victoria Tunnel and Newcastle Castle.

The city centre itself is very pedestrian friendly with wide pavements and bright street lighting.

Hop on the Metro

The Tyne and Wear 'Metro' is actually an overground light-rail network - with two lines and 60 stops throughout Newcastle, is the perfect way to explore the city on a shoestring.

There's even a metro line running between the city centre and Newcastle International Airport. Other top destinations include St. James Park, Tynemouth and Monument, and Jesmond, meaning you can take in the top sights while never leaving the network.

If you want to take everything in, you can save a packet with a 'Metro Day Ticket'. These are valid for unlimited travel on the Metro, Shields Ferry and local rail services. Prices start from £4.40 for one zone or £5.90 for all zones.

Ride the Bus

If you're talking public transport Newcastle is home to a number of bus companies including Nexus, Stagecoach, Go North East, and Arriva. These operate lines throughout the city, interlining with Metro, Rail and Ferry services.

If you're bussing around on a shoestring, visit the website of the operator in question to find the very best deals. For instance, Arriva offers a 'Day Saver' ticket which allows you to make as many trips as you like in a specified zone on a given day. You can buy these on board or via the dedicated app.

Go North and Stagecoach also offer similar one day bus tickets, which can help you save if you're making multiple journeys to explore all Newcastle has to offer.

Whichever bus you choose, Eldon Square Bus Station is located in the city centre, so is a great starting point for your journey. Take the time to do some window shopping in the many nearby retail outlets as you wait for your bus to arrive.
