Hidden Gems in Liverpool | Kabannas

1. Explore the secret underground bunker at Western Approaches

Back in the day visitors had to sign the Official Secrets Act to enter this building. This former WW2 bunker on Rumford Street has now become one of the top hidden gems you can find in the city.

Wander through a maze of rooms and offices including the Operations Rooms where military commanders, 'Wrens' and many more worked round the clock to keep Britain safe.

It was here that they monitored vital shipping routes and pin-pointed enemy locations using a huge map wall, to allow the Royal Navy to seek and destroy.  Make sure to take a glimpse at one of the few remaining intact wartime telephones, which once had a direct connection to the War Cabinet in London.

Prices for a self-guided tour start at £11.50 for concessions : WW2 veterans and children also get in for free, making this a good family-friendly activity. For the ultimate experience, splurge on a guided tour for £75 and make history for the whole family.

2. Take a River Cruise and Sightseeing Bus Tour

George knows, there are plenty of things to see in Liverpool. Still, is it better to experience them by land or water? Why not choose both? Thanks to Mersey Ferries, you can take a 50-minute 'Explorer' river cruise of Liverpool's most splendiferous waterfronts.

You can then follow this up immediately with a peek at 14 of Liverpool’s most famous landmarks via the City Explorer Liverpool open top bus, Sights include the Royal Albert Dock, the Cavern Quarter and the Chinese Arch. With a live guide on every bus, you and your fellow travellers will get the rundown of everywhere that's anywhere in the City.

Joint ferry and bus tickets start £18 for concessions. There's also a special group ticket (2 parents + 3 kids) for just £66 and under 5's travel free, making this the ideal tour for your next family reunion.

3. Rock up to Liverpool Mountain and see the Tate

This gravity-defying masterpiece was created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone in 2018, to mark the 10th anniversary of Liverpool being designated the European Capital of Culture.

The artwork is inspired by naturally occurring Hoodoos (spires or pyramids of rock often found in deserts) and is located in the Mermaid Courtyard, outside Tate Liverpool on the Royal Albert Dock.

Once you've taken Liverpool Mountain in from all angles, you're slap bang next to the Tate itself so make sure to pay a visit to explore other inspiring artwork. Did we mention admission is free? If you have little ones, make sure to pick up a free activity book for 'Mildred the Gallery Cat' to keep them engaged during the visit!

4. Light up your life at St. John's Beacon

Where better to spot hidden gems than at Radio City, home to St. John's Beacon?

Construction of St Johns Beacon began in 1965. At the time its main purpose waas to provide a ventilation shaft for the shopping complex below. These days its viewing platform lets you enjoy the most stunning views of Merseyside's skyline, 400 feet above the heart of the city centre. Can you imagine any better places to visit Liverpool where you can enjoy a more panoramic view?

Even if someone in your group has mobility issues, they won't miss out : the tower is wheelchair friendly and there are absolutely no stairs to climb.

Prices start at just £6.50 per ticket for concessions : a small price to pay for a panoramic view of all Liverpool has to offer. Complimentary tickets are also available for visitors' carers and assistants.

5. Enjoy an evening at the Everyman

Squashed between two cathedrals on Hope Street, the Everyman (or to give it's official name 'Everyman & Playhouse) is renowned for original productions like murder mysteries, stand up and musicals.

The theatre's "New Works" team ensures that new playwrights are supported, making sure each time you click "What's On", you'll see something fresh.

This is a great activity to do of an evening as the Everyman cafe serves a variety of food and drinks. Admissions prices will vary depending on the event, though these can be very inexpensive: for instance the theatre's currently running a 'Reel Tours: Mega Movie Quiz' for just £3 per person.

Form your team (up to 6 persons), then head on down on the third Thursday of every month to put your film knowledge to the test and hopefully bag some exciting prizes!
